What is PUNCTUM?

PUNCTUM

PUNCTUM is a multisensory photographic performance analysing the tactile elements of photography. It articulates how FINE ART photography specifically, draws its narrative out of the static photographic frame through piercing its audience viscerally.

Punctum was spurred from the premise initiated by Roland Barthes, which asserts that there are certain types of photography which have a level of advenience, a haptically piercing element of a photo which resonates outside of the frame to the audience, rising “from the scene, shooting (sic) out of it like an arrow, and pierces” (Barthes 26:1980).

The photograph, often with intentional visceral content, is not only pulled from the frame visually due to its aggressive and piercing nature, but equally with accompaniments of tactile, kinaesthetic content accompanied with the photograph.

PUNCTUM explores the liminal space in friction between reality and fantasy, creating a hetereotopic pocket where the audience are encouraged to cognitively play in a space that is not necessarily tied to the empirical. Using indexes of the real world, the frame itself is recognisable, often filled with shots associative with nature and the human experience,  but with surrealistic elements to the photographs, the frame is expanded and fantasy is encouraged.

The project takes a variety of different routes in its methods, collaborating with models, poets, writers and sound designers to create a combined method of photography.

The project follows the narrative arch of liminal spaces of existence, often delving into themes of life, death and rebirth that is associated with hetereotopic, liminal spaces. This is directly expanding from my world-view as an artist and someone who experiences derealisation and disassociation, where my reality often seems out of place, unconscious or unfocused. I explore this visually through my work as a fine art photographer in creating spaces for ‘worlding’ that does not exist in our reality- a margin outside of the norm.
